us4usa - You can't compare the cost of a car to an SUV or truck. They are totally different vehicles that serve different purposes. It's like justifying the cost effectiveness of a truck by saying it costs less to own than a bus.
Compared to the 5-year cost other similar vehicles, the volt is at best, a wash (until it comes time to replace the batteries).

Keep drinking that leftist Kool Aid "jedidiah." Recent science supports the conclusion that oil is a naturally renewing resource. How many dinosaurs do you think there WERE anyway?

GreenAstro: I love all the way too expensive comments.. guys you have not been looking at the prices of new cars lately..
Volt $39,312 Suburban $39,904 Tahoe $36,612 Ford F-250 $32,723 Escalade $61,223
Escalade 5 Year Total Cost to Own $76,001 F-25 5 year Total Cost to Own $57,529 Volt 5 year Total Cost to Own $40,444
So, you are shortsighted if all you look at is the initial cost of the car, for the 5 years that most people own a car the Volt is cheaper.
Here's one for you... How much did it cost me to own F-350 and a Suburban??? Family of six, we paid $15K for my truck crew 4x4 and $15K for the SUV 4x4 both used, $30K... I buy/sell cattle monthly sometimes weekly... Plus move hay year round and equipment, fuel in hay season... The wife drives the Suburban to works two miles from home, plus shops in town saturdays 15 miles...
Or how much could we save if we trade the p/u and SUV to buy two volts???
Thanks for your help in this matter...

Go ahead and buy one, Mr. Spiekerman. Let us know how you enjoy the cost of your replacement battery and how much fun you have when the thing spontaneously bursts into flames. As for me and my family, we will NEVER purchase another vehicle from any company which took our tax funded "bailout from Obozo."

Waste your money on the Zero Volt.
Keep taxpayer money out of it.
Let the greenies spend their own money, not taxpayers' money.
Let the greenies walk. Let them freeze. Let them go broke. Let them go first.
Green is red. Green is corrupt. Green is "through the looking glass."

The Volt doesn't need any help to be demonized. At $41,000 a pop, it does that very well on its own.

Simply eliminate most of the batteries and therefore cost, and the Volt would be fine. Then it's just the engine powering an electric generator -- Exactly how modern locomatives operate.

The Volt has a lot of things going for it. The high price is the only problem. I've shopped at Toyota, Nissan, Chevrolet and Honda lately. Every salesperson was spewing disinformation about the Volt. Things like, "You can't travel more than 40 miles without plugging it in for a charge","The batteries have caught fire under normal use","battery technology isn't ready", blah, blah, blah. I hope to see more plug-in models from many manufacturers. We should be asking why they don't offer them now. The technology exists.

regasaz - Yes, its sad that even though many of us have never been able to purchase a new car for ourselves, we get the privilege to pay 1/4 of the cost of someone else's new car. Sounds like reverse Robin Hood in action.

If these EV's are so great, why do you have to entice buyers with our tax dollars being used for incentives? Quit giving my tax dollars to these people that can afford a new car in the first place.

jcurley - Yes, this is true. However, being that electric vehicles are so new, early adopters may get stuck with this bill while someone who purchases one in a few years when battery technology has improved may not.

And most importantly: tests have proven that driving a Volt (even for extended periods) WILL NOT cause your penis to disappear. This fact, however, remains contrary to popular belief.

agr964 - I agree one is paying a premium to get the volt. But that is true for every other "NEW" car (and high-tech) idea. However, as you sell more, economies of scale kick in and the price drops.

If you purchased a Volt, Leaf or other current electric vehicle: congratulations, your money was wasted. $15,000 extra on top of what a normal car costs buys a lot of gas.
In fact, it buys about 3750 gallons at today's prices, which at 30 mpg would take you around the world almost 5 times.
Once you factor in the price of electricity to charge as well, plus replacement battery costs (~$7k-$10k) in 5-7 years, it just doesn't make sense at this time to go electric.

Personally, I think the Volt is a very nice car. The only reason the car isn't selling is simply because of the price. It's too expensive. IF GM could find a way to bring the price to the low to mid 20,000s, I'll buy one.

Okay, what is your point? The Volt is a failure and O'bonehead bailed GM out. Even his friend Imelt at GD couldn't buy enough Volts for GD to make them profitable. GM had to shut the line down. SHOCKER!

From all indirect evidence, the Volt is great. The only problem, and it is a big one, is its price. Otherwise, there would be one in my driveway.
