Liquid air 'offers energy storage hope'

BBC News -- Turning air into liquid may offer a solution to one of the great challenges in engineering - how to store energy.

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers says liquid air can compete with batteries and hydrogen to store excess energy generated from renewables.

As indicated by this article, this type of storage is best applied to industrial complexes and could serve very effectively in reducing operational energy costs.

Not very efficient - like ethanol more energy goes in than comes out.

Liquid nitrogen (the air is over 80% nitrogen) when poured out of a container just bubbles, not a lot of vapor pressure. Steam turbines need 500 pounds of pressure to inefficiently generate electricity. Pressures like 3000 pounds are efficient.

This is a science project with poor returns to try and justify intermittent wind power.
