Here's an idea - how about taxing the people using the roads to pay for maintenance of the roads.

How about we tax all those grossly overweight Mexican semi-trucks that are driving across our borders and are damaging our roads and not being made to pay for it?

He want to hike state tax .8 precent for roads but only .5 is for transportation, so the .3 is pork???
So they add $100 fee on alt. car because they pay less gas tax... But if you scrap gas tax no car will pay, so why keep the $100 for Alt. cars???
"The plan includes about $300 million for the Dulles Metrorail Extension Project and more for expanded passenger rail service in the state."
They should just vote, if they want the rail???

“The minute any state government lowers its gas tax, Big Oil just raises the price by the same amount.”
C’mon Rob, that’s BS and I’m sure you know it.
“Just a ploy to get votes, not economically feasible.”
McDonnell cannot run for reelection so it has nothing to do with votes, besides which, why would increasing the sales tax be so popular? Why not economically feasible? It sounds like a solid plan to me.

Then more can be diverted to other expenses. In Wi the former gov just stole from the transportation fund.

It makes little difference. The price at the pump will go down a little but citizens of Virgina will get squeezed elsewhere. It all evens out.
And, as far as taxes go, every possible tax is included in every product and service we buy anyway because of the cost of doing business. Don't think about this too much or you will get angry about paying Pennsylvania taxes for that Hershey bar you just ate.

Basically the same story was posted several days ago but this time some of the details are different — the per/gallon tax retained on diesel, for example. The proposed 5.8% sales tax would raise exactly the same amount of money as the 17.5¢/gallon tax when gas is $3.017/gallon. Since it is more than that in most areas of the state now, it would result in a small increase in gas prices. It would raise more tax money as the price of gas rises, which is probably the main impetus behind the proposal.

Why not make everybody pay to keep up the roads. We tax everybody who owns property to pay for schools. At least this way the drivers of EVs will have to pay for the roads too. Woulds you rather have big brother keep track of how many miles you drive and charge you by the mile? Everybody benefits from the roads so have everybody pay for them.

Why not gas tax based as a percent of price instead of a set number of pennies per gallon? That is why we can't keep up on road maintenance.

The governor of Virginia must be crazy. That will help the economy, NOT! People who don't drive but they do buy groceries would be getting punished. That is a good way to help the low income people, NOT!

Makes more sence. Replace per gallon road tax with % of price sales tax when prices are in a lower price, revenue will automatically increase when thec Big Oil Monopoly jacksw up prices, revenue will increase!

Even a bigger money grab thsn just the gas tax. Politicians think the public is stupid! There is only one pocket for all the money to come from and taxpayers are broke or close to broke!

A move in the right direction, but I wonder how .8 of sales tax replace 17.5 cents in fuel tax. But be a lot of sales. I think we will see more of this with alternative fuels and better MPG. I think we will also see this as as a use tax on a national basis in time, and why not. Reduce income tax and increase sales tax so all get to pay some. Start out with a low % national sales tax and reduce regular taxes. But spending and debit has to be cut WAY back and we are not going to like that one.
